As we all know, hacks still happen on Cardano, and one way to improve security and user experience is by using hardware wallets. However, the lack of accessibility of these devices limits their impact on the ecosystem. To address this issue, we want to explore a new approach: converting smartphones into hardware wallets using mobile-NixOS.

Background:

• Hardware wallets provide an additional layer of security for users, but they can be expensive, and accessibility is an issue.
• Smartphones are ubiquitous and can be easily repurposed as hardware wallets with the right software.
• Mobile-NixOS is a project that aims to bring the NixOS operating system to mobile devices.

Proposal:

We propose developing a solution that utilizes mobile-NixOS to convert smartphones into Cardano wallets. This will provide an accessible and cost-effective alternative to traditional hardware wallets.

Key Benefits:

• Improved accessibility: most people already have a smartphone, many people have old smartphones they don't use.
• Enhanced security: using a smartphone as a hardware wallet provides an additional layer of security for users.
• Better user experience: users can use their familiar smartphone interface to manage their Cardano assets.
• Dogfooding: buidling a hardware wallet is a challenge a developer could complete as a proof of expertise.
