I got my rtsp stream info from ODM but when I pair it with netcam_url my browser says unable to get stream from camera It's unclear whether my rtsp stream should include login credentials but it doesn't work with username password either This is frustrating because I found that NVR won't detect motion rather it relies on the camera to detect motion and send an alarm to the NVR(?) and for this to happen the camera and NVR have to be from the same manufacturer so for the time being I'm reverting to motion Disappointed that NVR's/Cameras are proprietary

You will probably have to test the connection string in an application such as ffplay or vlc. Once you get a connection string that works and shows the live camera view in those applications, you can use that for the netcam_url parameter.

How to provide userids and passwords as part of the url, is somewhat specific to the camera. i.e. Some provide it like rtsp://userid:password@whateverip:554/foobar or rtsp://whateverip:554/username=abc&password=secret or possibly something else or possibly on a different port;

In that example username cannot be preceeded by a forward slash it would need to be preceeded by a question mark

I got it to display the camera view in a window using ffplay but it still reports an error in the terminal window ([rtsp @ 0x762364000c80] method SETUP failed: 461 Unsupported Transport) but it doesn't work with motion with netcam_url defined in motion.conf where the browser window shows the message unable to open video device

beyond that I'm forced to use netcam_url line in motion.conf and not able to use conf.d files seemingly because I'm running on a laptop with webcam

You can specify items in a directory if you wish.

You can also specify the netcam_url information in file specified by the camera configuration parameter.

I'd recommend reviewing the log messages instead of the browser window. The log may indicate the specific syntax problem that occurs when Motion tries to open the camera.

Separately I was told that NVR's themselves can't detect motion the way Motion but instead rely on cameras to detect motion and send a signal to the NVR but the camera and NVR have to be of the same brand
