Keep trailing spaces at the end of line

Helix (25.07.1) seems to delete two spaces added at the end of line no matter what I do. trim.trailing-whitespace in [editor] section set to false or true makes no difference. File recognized as markdown or not doesn't make any difference. What am I missing? Thanks.

p.s. Reading this #10075 doesn't seem to offer any solution.
