nx reset gives Unsupported payload sent to daemon server: {"type":"FORCE_SHUTDOWN"}

I'm having problems with nx, and the first thing I'm told is to try nx reset.
Unfortunately, even that fails, giving me the following error:

Unsupported payload sent to daemon server: {"type":"FORCE_SHUTDOWN"}

nx version tells me:

Nx Version:
- Local: v20.5.1
- Global: v20.5.1

I ran nx repair and then nx reset stopped failing... but I started getting the same failures again later in the day.

I have the problem again and now nx repair does not fix it.
