Problem
As MAME bezel packs have grown in scope and image resolution, their size has increased tremendously.
For example, Mr. RetroLust's MAME Lights Out 4K Bezels is 25.5GB in total!
It can take users hours to download this pack over LaunchBox's rate limited servers and it can be hard to justify keeping packs like this on devices with limited storage.
Solution
AVIF compression can reduce PNG size by 6-10x, without noticeable quality loss.
AVIF is an open-source and royalty-free image format, meaning it can be used, modified, and distributed without licensing fees or restrictions.
I suggest that MAME support for AVIF decoding, either by including the capability within MAME itself or through avifdec which users can optionally download for this purpose.
