Update fails with "Error while Opening file handle" on Windows

I'm experiencing this issue across multiple Windows devices and am unsure whether this is primarily a user error or a Positron issue. When an update is available, Positron notifies me via the gear icon at the bottom left as also described in Updating Positron. After agreeing to the update and then the Positron restart, an error occurs starting with: "There was an error while Opening file handle ..."

My quick research led me (primarily) to this GitHub issue describing a similar VS Code problem. The solution there was to run VS Code as admin. So I tried that with Positron, but it did not help. Nor did restarting my computer.

For the sake of completeness, I would like to mention that this is not the first update of this kind and that previous updates worked without this problem.

I would appreciate support so that I can stay up to date with this great IDE.

@xx02al I'm sorry that you're having trouble updating Positron. Can you provide any logs? You can export them by using the command palette action Developer: Export logs.... Select Main and Window.

Are you also using the system or user install? Does it occur if you use the other?

Which files from C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Roaming\Positron should I keep (e.g., settings.json) before I delete that folder? And am I right assuming I will then put them into the new created C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Roaming\Positron?

When I now look into C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Local\Programs\Positron\resources\app\extensions\positron-assistant\resources\copilot there is a file named VERSION. C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Local\Programs\Positron\resources\app\extensions\positron-assistant\resources has the folder copilot and a file .gitignore.

I found out that there is antivirus software installed on the device that simply removes the copilot-language-server.exe. I am still trying to make sure that this antivirus software does not do such annoying things.

The safest is to backup your entire Positron AppData folder. If you need anything restored then you will have a copy. This is only to see if it resolves any of your issues. So you can try removing it and starting Positron so it will have a fresh state.

Although, I would try fixing the antivirus issue first. That seems to be causing most of your issues, if not all of them. It sounds like it is quarantining multiple files from the Positron install/update.

I have finally found a way to prevent this antivirus software from removing copilot-language-server.exe. Does the following screenshot look as healthy as possible to you now again?

As for automatic Positron updates—the beginning of the problems—I can't answer that at this point, because I downloaded and installed the latest version just a few minutes ago (and don't have the patience or time to experiment with older versions right now).

Glad that you got it working again. I agree that it is best to keep with the latest. If you encounter update issues again then you can add in any additional information.
