+This is our first story in our interview series **Stories of Champions**, where we introduce you to different Champions and the impact they have. Our first Champion is [Carolina Pradier](/es/author/carolina-pradier/), main maintainer of the eph package.
+
+[Carolina Pradier](/author/carolina-pradier/) has long worked to make the world a more equitable place. Her doctoral research focused on inequalities in science with a focus on the mechanisms that structure gender inequality in the Latin American scientific community. She is also part of [Ecofeminita](https://ecofeminita.com/) (Asociación Civil Economía Feminista), an interdisciplinary organization created and led by women.
+Carolina has a degree in Economics from the University of Buenos Aires and a holds a Master's degree in Social Sciences of Work from the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires. She has a PhD in Information Science from the University of Montreal and teaches at post-secondary institutions.
+
+As a researcher, Carolina was part of the Center for Studies on Population, Employment and Development and now works in the [Open Science research team at UNESCO](https://www.unesco.org/en/open-science). She also is the maintainer of the [eph](https://docs.ropensci.org/eph/) R package, whose objective is to facilitate working with the Permanent Household Survey data.

+## rOpenSci
+
+Carolina's encounter with the rOpenSci Champions Program seemed natural. Her goals and those of the organization were aligned. In her application to the Champions Program she expressed:
+
+> I would like to be part of the rOpenSci Champions Program to improve my skills as a developer, as well as to improve my abilities to teach and communicate these skills."
+
+Next followed over 12 months of training. Through the coaching, mentoring, and exposure to colleagues, Carolina received information on tools and processes, as well as advice and feedback to improve her package. She was also able to develop her communication skills and feel more confident in communicating more effectively with the people who use eph.
+
+Exchanges and meeting with other people made her work easier, and helped her stay organized and anticipate future problems she might encounter:
+
+> I think I felt very good when we finished the training and I started to work closely with my mentor, we had a good relationship and we could work very well and efficiently."
+
+In addition to being selected to participate in the rOpenSci Champions Program through the rOpenSci application, Carolina had already gone through a previous selection. The rOpenSci Champions Program accepts only individual applications. Therefore, when Carolina's team wished to participate, her colleagues encouraged her to participate on behalf of the team. 
+
+During the program, Carolina developed different events to help disseminate her work, share it with others, and invite them to get involved in open science. This idea was also present in the objectives that Carolina expressed in her first contact with rOpenSci:
+
+> One of my main motivations is to bring new tools to the communities of social scientists in which I actively participate in order to strengthen our capacities to transform reality."
+
+It was with this goal that Carolina [organized an event in Spanish](https://vimeo.com/899372049) with news and ideas for the use of the eph package. This achieved a double objective: sharing content about R packages in Spanish and bringing more people closer to the R and open science community.
+Carolina also participated in a [Community Call on the rOpenSci Champions Program.](/commcalls/july2023-championprogram/) where she shared her experiences alongside mentor [Beatriz Milz](/es/author/beatriz-milz/) and cohort partner, [Victor Ordu](/author/victor-ordu/).
+
+## Perfecting a job well done
+
+The [eph](https://github.com/ropensci/eph/) package processes data from the Permanent Household Survey ([INDEC](https://www.indec.gob.ar)) in Argentina to replicate or conduct independent analyses from those published in the reports prepared by the government agency. It also allows the analysis of different categories and indicators not provided in the official reports.
+Carolina explained that throughout the program they managed to improve the package:
+
+> "We tried to improve the quality of the code (reliability and efficiency), we improved the documentation and created new functions.
+
+They also worked hard to translate the documentation and make it more accessible to Spanish-speaking users.
+The [rOpenSci peer review process](https://github.com/ropensci/software-review/issues/593#issuecomment-1709968472) showed how a rigorous approach can also be welcoming and kind.

+## Open science
+
+The package is a tool for academic research, journalism and evidence-based public policy formulation. The champions program allowed us to add quality, improve the software and add different points of view through peer and expert review.
+
+Carolina is part of the civil association EcoFeminita where the Ecofemidata team provides data on gender inequality with indicators, statistics, and reproducible thematic reports based on the package. Among other uses, the Ecofemidata team maintains an app that analyzes the labor market, income, time use, and domestic work.
+Once again it was able to meet another of the objectives set at the beginning of the rOpenSci program:
+
+> I am particularly excited about the prospect of participating in a program aimed at making the R community more inclusive. in addition, I feel that this experience would be a great opportunity as it would allow me to meet and work with highly skilled professionals whose work I deeply admire. Not only am I interested in learning from their experience, but I also believe that building these networks can help increase the impact of my community's efforts and access new sources of support."
+
+The package further inspired other programmers, data scientists, and people from different disciplines to develop in Python the [PyEPH library](https://pyeph.readthedocs.io/es/latest/) library, which has a similar purpose to the epa package in R, but to be used and supported by people in the Python data community.
+
+## Beyond learning: building with a community
+
+Carolina Pradier was able to improve her R skills, acquire new skills, and offer a multilingual package so that more people can access open science. Experiences with her mentor, her peers, the people who participated in the review process, and the people who use the package were a great contribution to learning and personal growth. Her participation in the Champions Program was the beginning of a network of links that promise new projects.
+
+> I always had someone to talk to to help me solve problems; it was never a frustrating process."
+
+Carolina also added:
+
+> I think the team is very well organized to help you. During the training I got a lot of information on how to solve the problems that I could encounter".
+
+Shared knowledge allows us to anticipate, help and include. The more experiences like Carolina Pradier's there are, the more shared and *open* open science there will be.

+[Carolina Pradier](/es/author/carolina-pradier/) trabaja desde hace tiempo para que el mundo sea un lugar más equitativo. Su investigación doctoral se centró en las desigualdades en la ciencia con el foco puesto en los mecanismos que estructuran la desigualdad de género en la comunidad científica de América Latina. Además forma parte de [Ecofeminita](https://ecofeminita.com/) -Asociación Civil Economía Feminista-, una organización interdisciplinaria creada y liderada por mujeres.
+Carolina es Licenciada en Economía por la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Magíster en Ciencias Sociales del Trabajo de la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales de la UBA, Doctoranda en Ciencia de la Información en la Universidad de Montreal y docente de nivel superior.

+Como investigadora, formó parte del Centro de Estudios sobre Población, Empleo y Desarrollo y ahora trabaja en el equipo de investigación de [Ciencia Abierta de UNESCO.](https://www.unesco.org/en/open-science) Es _maintainer_ del [paquete de R ‘eph’](https://docs.ropensci.org/eph/), cuyo objetivo es facilitar el trabajo con los datos de la Encuesta Permanente de Hogares.

+## El Programa de rOpenSci
+
+Su encuentro con el programa de Campeon(e|a)s de rOpenSci parecía algo natural. Sus objetivos y los de la organización estaban alineados. En su aplicación al programa de Campeones Carolina expresó: 
+
+> Me gustaría formar parte del Programa rOpenSci Champions para mejorar mis habilidades como desarrolladora, así como para mejorar mis capacidades para enseñar y comunicar estas habilidades.”
+
+Y eso sucedió a lo largo de 12 meses de entrenamiento donde a través de la formación y el acompañamiento, Carolina recibió información sobre herramientas y procesos para mejorar su paquete con tutorías individuales y acceso a colegas y expertos en R que ayudaron a mejorar su proyecto. Pero además pudo desarrollar sus habilidades comunicativas logrando sentirse más segura y comunicando de manera más efectiva a las personas que usuan eph.
+
+El intercambio y el encuentro con otras personas facilitó el trabajo, lo ordenó y la ayudó a anticiparse a futuros problemas que podría encontrar: 
+
+> Creo que me sentí muy bien cuando terminamos la formación y empecé a trabajar estrechamente con mi mentora, teníamos una buena relación y podíamos trabajar muy bien y de manera eficiente.”
+
+Carolina no sólo fue seleccionada para participar del programa de Campeones de rOpenSci. Ya había pasado por una selección previa: como la aplicación al programa es individual fueron sus compañeros los que la incentivaron a participar en nombre del equipo.
+
+Durante el programa, Carolina desarrolló distintos eventos que contribuyeron a difundir sus trabajos, compartirlo con otros e invitar a que se acerquen a la ciencia abierta. Esta idea también estaba presente en los objetivos que Carolina expresó en su primer contacto con rOpenSci: 
+
+> Una de mis principales motivaciones es aportar nuevas herramientas a las comunidades de científicos sociales en las que participo activamente con el fin de reforzar nuestras capacidades para transformar la realidad”
+
+Fue en ese sentido que Carolina [organizó un evento en español](https://vimeo.com/899372049) con novedades e ideas para la utilización de su paquete epa logrando un doble objetivo: compartir contenido sobre paquetes de R en español y acercar a más personas a la comunidad. 
+Además participó de una [Community Call sobre el Programa de Campeones y Campeonas de rOpenSci](/commcalls/july2023-championprogram/) donde compartió su experiencia junto a la mentora [Beatriz Milz](/es/author/beatriz-milz/) y su compañero de cohorte, [Victor Ordu](/author/victor-ordu/).

+## Perfeccionar un trabajo bien hecho
+
+El [paquete eph](https://github.com/ropensci/eph/) permite procesar los datos de la Encuesta Permanente de Hogares- INDEC, Argentina para replicar u obtener conclusiones independientes de aquellas publicadas en los informes elaborados por el organismo estatal. Además permite analizar diferentes categorías e indicadores no proporcionados en los informes oficiales.
+Carolina explicó que a lo largo del programa lograron mejorar el paquete: 
+
+> Intentamos mejorar la calidad del código (fiabilidad y eficacia), mejoramos la documentación y creamos nuevas funciones”. 
+
+Además trabajaron con esfuerzo para traducir la documentación y hacerla más accesible para todos los usuarios y las usuarias que no hablan inglés. 
+Durante el proceso de revisión por pares de rOpenSci, [demostraron que la forma de trabajo puede ser rigurosa y cálida al mismo tiempo](https://github.com/ropensci/software-review/issues/593#issuecomment-1709968472)

+## Abrir la ciencia
+
+El paquete es una herramienta para investigaciones académicas, periodísticas y formulación de políticas públicas fundamentadas en evidencia. El programa de campeones y campeonas permitió sumar calidad, mejorar el software y sumar distintos puntos de vistas a través de la revisión por pares y personas expertas.
+
+Carolina forma parte de la asociación civil EcoFeminita donde el equipo Ecofemidata aporta datos sobre la desigualdad de género con indicadores, estadísticas, e informes temáticos reproducibles basado en el paquete. Entre otros usos, el equipo de Ecofemidata mantiene una app que analiza el mercado de trabajo, ingresos, uso del tiempo, y trabajo doméstico. 
+Una vez más pudo cumplir con otro de los objetivos planteados al comienzo del programa de rOpenSci: 
+
+> Me entusiasma particularmente la perspectiva de participar en un programa destinado a hacer más inclusiva a la comunidad R. Además, considero que esta experiencia sería una gran oportunidad ya que me permitiría conocer y trabajar con profesionales altamente cualificados cuyo trabajo admiro profundamente. No sólo me interesa aprender de su experiencia, sino que también creo que la creación de estas redes puede contribuir a aumentar el impacto de los esfuerzos de mi comunidad y a acceder a nuevas fuentes de apoyo.”
+
+El paquete inspiró además a que otros programadores, cientistas de datos y personas de diferentes disciplinas desarrollen en Python la [librería PyEPH](https://pyeph.readthedocs.io/es/latest/), que tiene un propósito similar al paquete de epa en R, pero para ser usado y sostenido por personas de la comunidad datera de Python.
+
+## Más allá del aprendizaje: construir en comunidad
+
+Carolina Pradier pudo aprender sobre R, ordenar su conocimiento, adquirir nuevas habilidades y ofrecer un paquete multilingüe para que más personas puedan acceder a la ciencia abierta. El contacto con su mentora, con sus pares, con las personas que participaron del proceso de revisión y las personas que usan el paquete fue un gran aporte de aprendizaje y crecimiento personal. Su participación en el Programa de Campeones y Campeonas fue el inicio de una red de vínculos que prometen nuevos proyectos.

+> Siempre tenía a alguien con quien hablar para que me ayudara a resolver los problemas; nunca fue un proceso frustrante”, 
+
+fue la contestación de Carolina ante la pregunta sobre posibles mejoras para hacerle al programa de Campeones y Campeonas y agregó: 
+
+> Creo que el equipo está muy bien organizado para ayudarte. Durante la formación obtuve mucha información sobre cómo resolver los problemas que podía encontrarme”.
+
+El conocimiento compartido permite anticiparnos, ayudar e incluir. Cuanto más experiencias como la de Carolina Pradier podamos tener más ciencia abierta compartida habrá.
