Excessive RAM usage

Recent versions of rust-analyzer use excessive amounts of RAM.

The memory usage grows normally while the workspace is being index, but starts growing seemingly for no reason afterwards. It levels off when the RAM is full (not counting swap). For me this happens at 40 GB.

The project is rather large and has a workspace with multiple crates.

I tried to reproduce the bug with a bunch of other projects, but couldn't.
Only my project lead to excessive RAM usage - and it did so consistently.
I then started disabling crates in my workspace, disabling patches, etc.
Now it doesn't happen anymore.
My guess is that the cache got broken somehow and fixed itself again.

So you may want to close this issue - or not. There is a bug somewhere, but I cannot reproduce it anymore.

Have the same issue and not big code... just a small training project with a window and showing some sys info.

I needed to stop the extension right away or would eat the 11Gb and freeze my computer in a couple minutes

Well, if we are to investigate it, we need a way to reproduce the issue.

I am not sure if this is the same problem but as of nightly 0.4.2655 and the stable released this morning rust-analyzer will consume all available ram until the system crashes. Normally RA consumes about 5GB for this project, it will go >20GB since this problem started.

Unfortunately the project is not public, it has ~900 dependencies.

This is happening on both linux/windows.

@PedroBica I can't reproduce the issue. It stabilizes its memory consumption at around 3.5GB. Does it consume more for you?

Around 2.8 GB RSS for me after opening all the files and hovering around.

I have some hypothesis on high memory consumption scenarios, though nothing has been verified yet 😅

• Host machine has a non-performant CPU
• Or, edit dependencies multiple times
