What is the intent here: HOME_DIR/\.cache/gstreamer-[0-9\.]+(/.*)?? To handle dir names with and without a dot, e.g., ~/.cache/gstreamer-1.2 and ~/.cache/gstreamer-3?

Yes. Get version 1.0, or version 2
