Not sure if you want this update or not, nevertheless, this is what I ended up doing to make a bbs with user registration, persistent messages, post and read commands, user auth.

Thank you for the contribution! Really appreciate your cleanup and add-ons. Some parts are going to be cherry-picked into the master branch for sure. The key thing I am missing is the Shutdown method as it is meant to provide graceful closing of all goroutines involved. Your code looks clean to me though.
