Choice of laptop on the turtlebot

Nick Walker edited this page Oct 11, 2017 · 1 revision

This page aims to help understand the choice behind laptop selection for the turtlebot 2.0. Right now, we plan to use Asus X202E with these robots.

Laptop Constraints

  • Laptop Charging Power: The turtlebot provides 40W of power for laptop charging while docked or on its own charger. Consequently, only a laptop which expects less than 40W of power can be used (i.e a laptop with a charger pushing out <= 2.1A at 19v). This greatly limits the choice of laptop.
  • Weight: The turtlebot base has a load capacity of about 4-5 Kg. This means that it is a better idea to keep the weight of the laptop less for potential delivery tasks. I recommend something around the 3lb range.
  • Size: 10-11" laptops will fit easily on the base plate meant for the laptop. I believe some 13" laptops can also be fit in that space. Larger laptops will have to be placed on top, which is undesirable.

Asus 1025C

  • This is the default laptop shipped with the turtlebot by Clearpath/I Heart Engineering.
  • Intel Atom N2600 Dual-Core Processor (1.60GHz) (Benchmark score ~ 547)
  • 2 GB DDR3
  • This netbook requires some degradation of navigation parameters to run the turtlebot driver and navigation code. It is unclear whether any more computationally intensive code can be run at the same time on this netbook.

Acer Aspire One AO756-4890

  • One of the better netbooks at 40W.
  • Intel Pentium 987 (1.50 Ghz Dual Core) (Benchmark Score ~ 1210)
  • 4GB DDR3 SDRAM
  • We have one in the lab. The netbook is decent, but was still a bit slow while running code.
  • All Acer Aspire netbooks are notoriously difficult to purchase.
